UL 1277 Tray Cable (TC-ER): Specs That Matter in Cable Tray Installations

Tray cable listed to UL 1277 is the default choice for power and control circuits installed in cable trays. The -ER suffix (Exposed Run) matters most: it allows the cable to leave the tray and run exposed between the tray and the equipment, which removes a large part of the conduit bill.

  • Conductors: THHN/THWN-2 or XHHW-2, 14 AWG – 1000 kcmil, 2 to 36 cores.
  • Insulation: PVC+nylon for standard service; XLPE for higher temperature and wet industrial zones.
  • Jacket: sunlight-resistant PVC rated for exposed runs; shielded versions available for instrumentation.
  • Voltage: 600V; grounds sized per UL 1277.

For bidding documents, always state: cores × size, insulation type, ER requirement and sunlight rating. Our team can cross-check your Bill of Material against the mill’s constructions within one working day.
