The FC/UPC fiber optic connector precisely connects the two end faces of the fiber. The critical requirement is to align the axes of the two fibers so that the optical energy leaving the transmitting fiber is coupled into the receiving fiber as completely as possible — the connector’s contribution to loss in the optical link is therefore kept to a minimum. The UPC (ultra physical contact) end face gives a low insertion loss with a typical return loss above 50 dB.
